Increases in Oil and Gas Recovery Rate in Norwegian Sea Reservoirs Drives Decision

CALGARY, Alberta–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Geomodeling Technology Corp., a leading provider of innovative software for the upstream oil and gas industry, today announced that Statoil is currently piloting the SBED modeling system with the aim of implementing this technology as a corporate standard for their “Multi-Scale” Model workflow.  Successful studies by Statoil in some of their fields on the Norwegian Continental Shelf using this technology resulted in a significant increase in Improved Oil Recovery (IOR) potential.

Using SBED™ from Geomodeling, Statoil geologists, petrophysicists and reservoir engineers have been able to capture the fluid flow impact from complex, fine-scale inter-layering within heterogeneous reservoir units, improving their reservoir property simulations and reserve predictions. The unique features of SBED have enabled Statoil to develop a better understanding of its reservoir assets and to optimize strategies for oil recovery.

According to Alf Birger Rustad, Principal Researcher at Statoil, “We have successfully used SBED for several years to develop more accurate characterizations of our fields on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. Ongoing pilot studies with SBED on thin-bedded, heterolithic reservoirs have shown excellent results that we hope to replicate in many of our assets.  Our aim is that the pilots will result in incorporation of SBED into our standard workflows for reservoir characterization across all of our business units.”

SBED was developed through a consortium of eight of the world’s largest oil and gas companies in pursuit of capabilities beyond those offered by conventional reservoir modeling technology.  At Statoil, SBED is being used to bridge gaps between pore-scale and full-field models.  Statoil researchers have successfully generated effective porosity, absolute permeability and two-phase relative permeability values from SBED for input to large-scale reservoir simulations and reserve estimations.  Results from SBED models are providing more realistic distributions of rock properties in reservoir intervals and more accurate reserve calculations and production profiles.
